Career Support – A Wider Circle

a wider circle provides essential support to children and adults transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic abuse, and entering the workforce. As an intern in our Research & Innovation department, you will assist with the research that propels this effort and contribute to the larger conversation about poverty in America.

Research & Innovation

A wider circle internship is a unique opportunity to gain experience in an organization and work on a variety of projects that will help propel your career. Many research and innovation organizations have specific internship programs that are a great way to build your resume and boost your confidence, while learning more about the field.

There are thousands of research and innovation internships nationwide. A wide range of positions are available in government, nonprofit, and corporate settings, including opportunities for college and graduate students. You can search for an internship by field of interest, location, and name of host organization.

Research & Innovation offers a summer internship that gives interns an opportunity to learn about research and develop skills related to their areas of interest. Depending on the area of research, you may be involved in the research process itself, drafting reports, analyzing data, writing a blog post, or any other number of activities that will provide you with valuable and challenging experiences.

For example, you could be a part of the team working on an analysis of religious change in nearly 200 countries. You would be responsible for collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data. Other responsibilities may include preparing reports, submitting data to external sources, and developing a portfolio of your research work.

During the internship, you will also be given the option to participate in professional development workshops and trainings. These sessions will help you improve your communications skills, gain office etiquette and develop your interpersonal skills.

The R&I program is designed to foster the intellectual, emotional and professional growth of interns as they become increasingly self-directed learners and independent practitioners. This is accomplished through a scientist-practitioner model of training that emphasizes the integration of scientific knowledge with clinical theory, practice and interventions in ways that align with the goals, values and standards of clinical psychology.

In addition, the program strives to cultivate a training environment that fosters an integrated approach to professional development as influenced by a developmental perspective and a broad range of interests, skills and professional goals. As an intern, you are expected to work closely with your supervisor to establish a learning agreement at the start of the year that outlines your personal and professional goals for the internship.

Career Support

Career support is a set of services, such as career information provision (in print and ICT-based formats), assessment and self-assessment tools, counseling interviews, taster programs to sample options before choosing them, work search programs, and transition services, that can help individuals navigate the process of career development. It can be facilitated by education, counseling and human resource management professionals, or by non-professionals, including friends and family.

At the university level, campus career services typically focus on providing students with guidance and resources on identifying their interests and strengths, as well as career choices that will lead to their success in a professional setting. They often offer workshops or other programs to introduce students to the importance of networking, and can provide one-on-one coaching if necessary.

They may also provide support to incoming college freshmen or students with significant financial barriers, such as those who are the first in their family to attend college. These students may not have access to the same career advice or mentorship from their parents, and they will need support to make smarter decisions about college and their future careers.

For students who are looking to get a jumpstart on their professional lives, campus career services offer programs like internships and job shadowing opportunities that can help them land a job before they graduate. This can help them start to pay off student debt, while allowing them to gain experience and build their networks early on in their careers.

Moreover, they can also help alumni who are seeking career change by recommending new career paths or training for management positions. They can also help them find employment with companies that have a reputation for hiring people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, so they can be more competitive in the workplace.

The campus career center at Siena College in Silver Spring, Maryland, has a two-week internship program for First Years that gives them the opportunity to work with a real-world organization to learn about the operations of the company and how they may be able to apply their skills. They are also matched with a Second Year student coach who is an informed and knowledgeable contact that can provide them with resume, cover letter and networking advice, industry-specific mock interview prep, introductions to other students in their field of interest and much more.

Human Resources

Human resources is the department that manages employee relations, hiring, training, career development, benefits, company culture, and more. A well-run human resources team is essential to a successful business. Without a strong HR department, employees might not be able to do their jobs.

Recruiting, hiring, and training new employees is an important job that requires a lot of attention and care. You’ll work with candidates, help them complete payroll and benefits forms, prepare onboarding packets for new employees, and ensure that they’re complying with labor laws.

You’ll also be responsible for employee performance evaluations and creating company-wide feedback processes to help employees feel satisfied with their jobs, committed to the growth of your business, and invested in its success. Your work with employees also includes ensuring they’re properly paid for their work, making sure they have access to the appropriate health and wellness programs, and addressing any issues they might have.

Your duties in human resources also include helping employees achieve professional goals, such as earning a specific higher education degree through a tuition assistance program. Continuing education opportunities can boost morale and incentivize employees to stay with the company.

In addition, you’ll be responsible for designing and implementing workplace policies to make sure everyone in your company works efficiently and safely. This means you’ll work to set clear boundaries for the use of workplace technology, promote healthy habits among employees, and develop a strong company culture that promotes teamwork and collaboration.

You’ll be working in the human resources department, which is an integral part of wider circle and will likely be the most challenging internship you have. It’s a great chance to get a look at what life is like in a larger organization and learn what makes an effective, high-performing human resources department. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop relationships with people of different backgrounds, which can be helpful for future career development.
